Dear fellow seller on Delcampe,

I'd like to open a discussion on Fixed price format sales vice Auction format sales here on Delcampe. Pro & con.

I would like to suggest that sellers take a second hard look at the fixed price method of selling here on Delcampe.

At first one would think that selling by auction would get you the best return for your item. At first thought I thought this also.

But now I think that one has to consider selling at fixed price in order to generate more sales.

We recently reached our 100,000 item listed here at Delcampe. That # of items so far generated 18,000 items sold in sales. Fully 91% of them were through the fixed price format for us.

We are
sold on that method of selling.

Here is what we do and why we do it at SCVIEW.

The Fixed price format on Delcampe also gets your item automatically listed directly into Googlebase ; enabling your item to be seen on the most active site on the Internet as well as Delcampe.

The Fixed price format gets you more "impulse" buys. Someone sees your item on google. They see that they can buy it right away and they do so. No waiting on the item no worrying about any "sniper" software coming in at the last moment and taking an item away before you can respond.

I admit that The auction format does get the occasional bidding war, but as a whole items both here and on Ebay go "one bid and out".

You could have it both ways if you like. Put your item up and let it run for a week. If no sale, re list it as a fixed price item and let it concurrently receive google exposure.

The current mess that is ebay was in a large part caused by the failure of the management there to recognize that buyers prefer fixed price sales over auction format sales. Especially when the last min sniper software is factored in.

So now, We now only do fixed price sales here on Delcampe.

When we did only auction sales we got one sale for ever 13.11 items listed.
With fixed price sales we are getting one sale for every 5.4 items listed.

Our average sale price for auctions was $10.97 USD and for fixed price it is $11.32 USD.

Our average auction customer buys 2-3 items at a time.
Our average fixed price format buyers buys 6-8 items at a time.

In the auction format every 27th person was a new buyer on Delcampe.
In the Fixed price format every 11th buyer is new to Delcampe.

So for us we get more sales per buyer, more $$$ per sale and more new buyers to Delcampe.

Another nice side effect of listing in the fixed price format is that as the number of Delcampe items on Google grows, the ranking of Delcampe among online auction site goes up, getting more exposure for the site as a whole, and ultimately more sales for us sellers here on Delcampe.

What is your view on this?

Hi Scview,

I agree with you on all points (and obviously you did your homework very well!)
But what's the use of opening a discussion about this? If the buyer favors the fixed price method......the seller offers it! Simple as that. People don't want to wait one or two weeks on their items. They just want to have it as soon as possible.
For me there's only one exception: When I think there's a fair chance that more buyers are interested in an item, then I use the auction format. It probably also depends on the product you sell. I sell vinyl records and the majority at Delcampe seems only interested in stamps and postcards. (but the record-population is growing pretty fast!) So it's no exception that an item is sold after 1 or even 2 years. And in that case it has no use to use the auction format.
So if you're still looking for that long lost record.........let me know and I'll sell it to you instantly. ;-)

Kind Regards from Holland

bonsoir randy,

i am, of course, a philatelist - so my selling choices are stamps and covers. but i do sell a few postcards. if an item i have is approached by an individual with an offer of a lower price, i do sometimes give a price break by changing the auction to a 'buy now' option. it would be good if delcampe could give both options when an auction is started - a start price or a choice of a 'buy now' price. if the 'start' price is chosen, the 'buy now' price is no longer applicable and the auction continues. if the 'buy now' price is chosen, then the sale is automatically closed. this might help to increase sales dramatically. how about it sebastien?

bonjour stephano,

i have my clear days of thinkin'. actually, it is done on many other selling sites, so why not offer it on delcampe. i think seb wants to utilize the reserve price function but the seller is charged a fee for this if i am not mistaken. no other site charges for something like this. why here? there have been rate increases which justify the new server costs, but these nickle/dime fees for some services provided are unwarranted. even if you in the elite 'metal' brigade. does a purple heart count? oh sorry, that is a medal, not metal. only one cup of coffee this morning. :gna:

Dear Scview,

Although I don't have any input as I am new to Delcampe, I am very interested in your numbers. I am about to close down my 4 year old Ebay Store, and move it somewhere, and am torn as to where to go. I am a stamp seller, specialising in new issues from Africa and Eastern Europe, many of which I pick up during my business travels for my day-time job. I am certainly encouraged by the notion of selling 1 item for every 5-6 listed.

My experience from Ebay (during the good times) in selling stamps, probably much like postcards, is that it often takes 6-12 months for a certain item to sell. Sometimes I would get lucky, and find a hot issue that I would sell all 20-30 copies in a week or two, but generally, it would take substantially longer. Unlike the fast moving articles on Ebay such as electronics, that seem to move much faster and within 1 week.

Considering 18,000 sales - I give you a big congratulations!!

I look forward to more or your insights.

best regards,

Brad

If it's going to take months to sell something, free listing would be of utmost importance. I'm not familiar enough with other sites besides here and e-bay to know other stamp sites but Delcampe sure does seem to be growing quickly--especially the English-speaking side. I have excellent US, Canadian and UK customers.

By the way, I always felt I needed to be very careful with what I listed on e-bay because of the costs (I only listed items as one-week auctions.) I had a 25-40% sell-rate depending on the week. Here at Delcampe, I have sold c. 1,100 of the 3,100 items (90%+ postcards, but many covers and some photos) I have ever listed which is as good a rate (35%) as 'that other site'.

Welcome, uppercanadian, and thank you Team Delcampe!

Another nice side effect of listing in the fixed price format is that as the number of Delcampe items on Google grows, the ranking of Delcampe among online auction site goes up, getting more exposure for the site as a whole, and ultimately more sales for us sellers here on Delcampe.

What is your view on this?

Pretty good analysis!
I was not selling a thing, (I sell surplus and fairly low value lots, covers and poscards, and it helps purchasing lots for my collection ) ,wondering why,as my price were on the low side.
after reading your message, I switched to fixed price; It looks better, even if not that exciting.
the only thing about Delcampe, visitors are not as numerous as on the "other" site where i sell from time to time ; the google listing could improve that; also I wonder why auction format could not go into the google listing (the "other" can, apparently)?

Well you have sold me on the "fixed price idea. I am converting most of my listings to that system and the special discount stays until 31/12/08
or I run out of stock As I am not a club member I have to change them all manually:whitewine::redwine::pc_user3:..

I too have converted over to the fixed price format and sales seem to have picked up a tad but I would have to agree with others in this thread that Delcampe has a small membership and not all are obviously looking for stamps so one has to be patient.New people are arriving daily so the potential for growth is there and we have the luxury of not paying for listing fees.My life is not dependent on buying and selling stamps I am here to advance my own collection so as I said above one just has to be patient and I can easily afford that luxury.

bonsoir randy,

i am, of course, a philatelist - so my selling choices are stamps and covers. but i do sell a few postcards. if an item i have is approached by an individual with an offer of a lower price, i do sometimes give a price break by changing the auction to a 'buy now' option. it would be good if delcampe could give both options when an auction is started - a start price or a choice of a 'buy now' price. if the 'start' price is chosen, the 'buy now' price is no longer applicable and the auction continues. if the 'buy now' price is chosen, then the sale is automatically closed. this might help to increase sales dramatically. how about it sebastien?

amities,

:D :coffee:

While I agree a Buy it Now option would be great. I don't believe that Delcampe would be able to do that. EBay spent years and millions fighting a lawsuit over that very option. Seems MercExchange LLC has or had, a patent on that option. I believe in the end that eBay purchased the Patent from them for an undisclosed amount.

SC View Thank you for posting this, as the end of the year approaches, I see already that eBay takes way too much of my Postcard sales to make it worth wile to keep them there. I was wondering which way was doing best on Decampe. Do you have any stats on time frame of sale of Auction verses Fixed Price?

bonjour guitarman,

this has been a healthy debate but no comments from management. however, i think i do remember something about that lawsuit involving the 'buy now' options and ebay. of course, we can choose a 'fixed' price, just not both on delcampe. i wonder, would that lawsuit or patent be good outside the u.s.?

There are at least two different ways to achieve BIN.

In the first example the seller enters a Start Price and A Buy It Now Price

Example:
Start Price $10.00 ----- BIN Price $12.00

A buyer who bids $12.00 will win the item instantly.

If the buyer bids the Start Price of $10.00 the sale turns into an auction and the BIN price of $12.00 disappears. The bid price of $10.00 (the Start Price) will win the auction if there are no further bids. This mode is fair to both Buyer and Seller as the Buyer may win the item for just $10.00 and the Seller May easily end up with a Bidding War once the BIN option is removed.

In the second example, there is also a Start Price and a BN Price – however, the BN (Buy Now Price) must not exceed the Start Price and the first bidder will be the winner.

There are more than 100 PHP Probid sites using the BIN feature without problems from eBay.

eBay may have been sued by MercExchange LLC because they “lifted” an alleged patent but where do you think MercExchange LLC got the feature from?

I’ll tell you – they “lifted” it from Yahoo who had used it years before under the name of FBN – “First Bid Wins”. Yahoo never had the brains to patent it.

It would appear that the Online Auction format is dying fast – but so is the conventional Online Fixed Price.

The future lies with hosting sellers’ personal eCommerce sites in a venue such as this and the “First to Do” properly will be the leader and automatically #1. At the moment eBay is #1 in the existing field and the others all follow but are never able to catch up.

I could give many more examples but I don’t think it would be appreciated if I started to name who’s doing what.

I’m afraid that having someone change the site skin colour from time to time isn’t going to help in the current climate.

Unfortunately, this site is not a level playing field and it is made difficult for other than a select handful to succeed. (Shades of eBay is not the answer).

It is truly a shame because this site could have it all.

Thanks for bringing in discussion this subject. It's interesting because I didn't use the fixed price.I had several proposals from buyers to accept the fixed price.Every time the buyer bought from that country or topic more than 20 items in order to save money on S&H.In this case the fees were spread over the bought items and the price ,on the item increased 1-2 cents.

This is a good idea.My prices are between 2-40% from Scott Catalog, for used, mint, postcards,FDC.I am not very good in handling the computer functions.Maybe you can help me to change all lots( around 19,200) from auction site to fixed price.I don't have enough energy and time to change each individual lot .DO YOU KNOW HOW I CAN CHANGE ALL LOTS WITH ONE CLICK ?

THANKS FOR YOUR SUGGESTION.
