In front of 48,000 fans in the packed Vienna Ernst Happel Stadium, Herzog’s left foot propelled the ball from around 20 metres into the back of the net, beating the Swedish goalkeeper Thomas Ravelli. This dream goal meant that Austria won 1-0, a major step towards winning the qualification group in 1998.
This historic goal is as it were the “content” of the new commemorative – a very special stamp that shows not just a single image but practically a complete “film”. The magic word that makes this possible is “lenticular technology”.
A special method processes the individual images of the film, which lasts about three seconds (and shows the entire goal scene) and stores them in one single picture using lenticular technology. By moving the photo manually, the impression is created of a continuous action. The result is also known as a motion-image picture. What is truly new in international philately is the reproduction of an entire film – never seen before on a stamp. And so there can be no doubt that this commemorative will attract huge attention, and not only amongst philatelists!
